Are natural materials suitable for upholstering furniture?
Of course! Natural fabrics such as linen and cotton have been used for upholstering chairs and armchairs for centuries. It is only in recent decades that they have been supplanted by artificial fabrics, which are cheaper to produce. However, with increasing health and environmental awareness, natural upholstery and decorative fabrics are attracting more and more interest. Why?
What about durability? Are linen and cotton upholstery fabrics durable?
Cotton and linen fibers are durable. In addition, the thicker and denser the weave, the more resistant the fabric is to abrasion. However, natural fabrics are not water- and stain-resistant, and may also be more susceptible to being torn by sharp animal claws.
On the other hand... All the chairs and armchairs we refurbished at BY FOXES were covered with artificial fabrics. All of these fabrics had to be replaced because they were... dirty, rubbed or torn. Nothing lasts forever, and when choosing a fabric for upholstering furniture, it's a good idea to consider how intensively it will be used. Natural upholstery fabrics are unlikely to work well on bus seats or for sewing a dog bed, but they can be successfully used in the renovation of furniture for home use.

Artificial fabrics are also not 100% resistant to dirt, abrasion or tearing, as you can see in the photo (chair undergoing restoration at BY FOXES).
Why it is worth to use natural materials to restore chairs and armchairs?
-
Because they are healthy
For the adults and children who use them. Linen and cotton fabrics are soft, breathable and hypoallergenic, which is not insignificant for our skin. Linen additionally exhibits antibacterial and antifungal properties. The pigments used for printing on such fabrics are ecological and OEKO-TEXT first class certified.
-
Because they are biodegradable
This is important when we decide to refresh the furniture in the future. In this way, we can prolong the use of an upholstered chair or armchair and do double duty for the environment. One, by giving the furniture a second life. Two, without producing waste that decomposes for up to hundreds of years.
-
Because they are simply… beautiful!
Natural upholstery and decorative fabrics fit into any house interior. They are elegant and timeless. And above all... close to nature!
What natural fabric to choose for furniture renovation? And for sewing pillowcases, curtains or tablecloths?
BY FOXES currently offers two types of fabric, so you can get a good fit for your needs.
Upholstery and decorative fabrics
The NATURAL PREMIUM series are thick (410 g/m3) linen and cotton fabrics with a distinct weave. They are pleasant to the touch thanks to their softening and imperceptible digital printing. The reactive dyes used are highly resistant to light, friction and acid and alkaline perspiration. These natural fabrics will work well for the restoration of upholstered armchairs and chairs.

Decorative fabrics
The NATURAL series are cotton fabrics of medium thickness (270 gr/m3). Their weave is strong and smooth, and the digital printing is undetectable. The water-based pigments used are slightly less resistant to wet rubbing, but gain in lightfastness. The printing process itself is also even more environmentally friendly than reactive printing (it needs 50% less energy and water and produces 60% less waste water). These fabrics are suitable for house decoration in a broad sense.
